From haunted televisions to killer apps, horror cinema has long turned our everyday technologies into sources of dread. This Halloween season, join us for a special presentation featuring selected clips from films featuring rogue smart homes (Demon Seed, Donald Cammell, 1977), jealous cars (Christine, John Carpenter, 1983), dangerous gaming systems (eXistenZ, David Cronenberg, 1999), cursed videotapes (The Ring, Gore Verbinski, 2002), and zombifying cells phones (Cell, Tod Williams, 2016). Through these films, we’ll explore how filmmakers across decades have transformed familiar devices into gateways for fear, and why technology continues to be one of horror’s most unsettling villains.
