Event Details
Ages 8-12: Are you interested in computer coding? Come to the free workshop “Learn to Code with Scratch” presented by Lola Larsen, a student from North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. Registration is required and there is limited space. Please register online and email Ms. Jennifer at eashjl@forsyth.cc with questions. Details below:
- Overview: CannedCorn is a canned beginner Scratch curriculum replete with slides and original exercises. The hope is for kids to see for themselves that coding is much more than writing tedious, lengthy blocks of text—it’s something creative and fun. You don’t need any prior coding experience to teach, only a computer and heart to serve!
- What is Scratch programming?: Scratch programming is a block-based visual programming language and website aimed primarily at children as an educational tool, with a target audience of ages 8 to 16. Rather than writing lines of code, kids piece together blocks to create their own stories and games.
- Impact: Our program teaches kids how to code in the Scratch software and think of innovative ways to solve problems. This directly connects to creativity because of the innovation needed by students to code and learn how to code. Especially when we have challenges in our program that require even more creativity to code new scenarios. Lastly, code can be a life skill, but more importantly, being able to collaborate and persevere in challenges is a huge part of our program as failure is part of the process of learning how to code.
